About Us
Who are the Green Spring Extension Master Gardeners (GSEMGs)?
We are a group of approximately 180 dedicated volunteers who work through various community outreach programs to educate and promote environmentally-sound horticultural practices. While new members join every year, some of our members have been part of our team for more than 20 years. Although our range of experience, expertise and interests is diverse, we all have one thing in common - a passion for ecologically responsible gardening and a desire to share this with our community.
What do we do?
Our membership participates annually in a minimum of 20 hours of service and 8 hours of continuing education. However, opportunities abound for GSEMGs who would like to do more. We offer many types of activities that range from working in one of our community gardens to assisting the public via virtual or in-person help desks, providing topical garden talks, adopting a library, and a variety of specialty committees for publicity as well as training and development. There is truly something for everyone to enjoy!
How can you become a member of our team?
You must complete and submit an application to join GSEMG. If you are accepted into the program, you will complete 50 hours of horticultural training that will be provided by a team of experts from September through December of the same year. Training usually includes topics such as Botany, Soil, Entomology, Lawn & Turf, Plant Propagation, Plant Pathology, Pest Management, Water Quality & Conservation, Pruning, Natives & Invasives, Woody & Herbaceous Landscape Plants as well as Vegetable & Fruit Gardening. After training, you will complete a 50 hour internship during the following year before your master gardener certification is completed.
