About Green Spring Gardens

Green Spring Gardens is a must-visit park, a year-round gold mine of information and inspiration for the home gardener. It's an outdoor classroom, a museum, and a national historic site. Its mission is to connect the community to natural and cultural resources through horticulture, education, and stewardship.

The park has a wooded stream valley with ponds, a naturalistic native plant garden, more than 20 thematic demonstration gardens, a greenhouse, a plant shop, two gift shops, a historic house, and a horticulture reference library. The gardens and educational programs focus on practical landscaping and gardening techniques that are appropriate for the Washington metro area. The park encompasses 31 acres and is operated by the Fairfax County Park Authority with the assistance of various nonprofit organizations including the Green Spring Extension Master Gardeners and the Friends of Green Spring Gardens.

The Gardens feature boxwood hedging, roses, and perennial as well as annual borders. Explore the National Witch Hazel Collection, which has more than 215 plants and 110 types of witch hazel. The park also has a tropical greenhouse, a wooded stream valley with ponds and gazebo, a naturalistic native plant garden, and over 20 demonstration gardens. It is a member of the North American Plant Collections Consortium for its Hamamelis collection (130 taxa, including all 4 species).
